I want to finish reading “The Tell-Tale Heart” today, and I want to get the kids talking about style; yesterday, as we read through the story we talked about how Edgar Allan Poe created a mood through his word choice, his dashes, and the imagery of the story.
It was pretty cool to talk about mood so deeply, as we’ve only discussed the term once. It was even cooler to talk about “the imagery” because we haven’tt alked abou that at all.
So, today, I’m going to shoot for style by having the students finish the story, and then watch each of the two videos below. After watching each, I hope we can have a conversation about how the movie “style” and the author’s “Style” change our overall vision of the story. We’ve had success in our previous discussions, so I hope this one works as well.
First up is the 1953 animated version, narrated by James Mason
We’ll follow this with a much more modern version from a team of Berkely college students, who go by the name ))((
(which itself is a relatively obscure movie reference, if you’re “cheeky” enough)
I’ll let you know how it works out.
